2018년 6월 13일은 지방선거 날이었다. 알려져 있다시피 한국 정치에서 여성은 매우 과소대표되고 있다. 2016년 총선에서 비례대표를 포함해 총 300석 중 17%인 51명의 여성이 당선되었는데, 국제 순위에서 100위권 밖일 정도로 저조한 수준이지만 그나마도 역대 가장 많은 여성이 국회에 들어선 순간이었다.

6.13 지선에서도 여성 과소대표가 현저히 드러났다. 17개 시도지사 선거에서는 여성이 한 명도 당선되지 않았고, 226개 구시군장 선거에서는 단 8명의 여성이 당선되었다. 이들 8개 지역을 지도에 흰색으로 표시했다 (좌). 우측 지도에는 거기에 더해 여성 구시군장 후보가 있었던 총 32개 지자체가 여성후보 지지율에 따라 회색 밝기를 차등하여 표시되어 있다.

South Korean Municipalities won by Women in 2018

South Korean local elections were held yesterday. It is a country where women in politics are notably underrepresented; for instance, the 2016 legislative election saw 51 women lawmakers enter the National Assembly, or 17% of the 300 total seats. This ratio, which ranks quite low internationally, was nevertheless the highest the country has ever seen.

2018’s elections were no exception to this tendency. No women were elected in the 17 metropolitan mayoral and gubernatorial elections; only 8 came out victorious out of 226 municipal mayoral elections. The below maps shows where these 8 women won (left) in addition to the 32 municipalities that had female mayoral candidates (right).
